About this event

The Solid Waste & Recycling Committee, formed in 1989, is tasked by the Select Board to promote waste reduction and environmental consciousness within the Town of Milford and address the needs of the Transfer Station and Recycling Center, with considerations given to the overarching goal of protecting the environment for generations to come. Recycling is the process of collecting, sorting, and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. It helps conserve resources and reduces landfill and incinerator use. - Benefits: - Conserves natural resources by reusing materials. - Reduces energy consumption compared to producing products from raw materials. - Lowers greenhouse gas emissions and mitigates climate change. - Decreases pollution and landfill space needed. - Commonly Recycled Materials: Mixed Paper, Corrugated cardboard, glass, #1 and #2 plastics bottle (like PET and HDPE), metals (aluminum, steel), mixed metals, phones, batteries, printer cartridges, textiles and organics (composting). - Challenges: Contamination in recycling streams, lack of infrastructure, economic viability, and public participation can affect recycling effectiveness. **Relationship between Recycling and MSW:** - Recycling is a key component of managing municipal solid waste sustainably. - Diverting recyclable materials from MSW reduces the volume of waste that requires landfill or incineration and saves the Town money! - Promoting refuse, reduce, reuse, rot (composting organics) and recycling (the 5Rs) helps minimize waste generation overall.
