About this event

Music on Norway Pond opens its season on November 8 with the Juniper Trio: violinist Geneva Lewis, violist Emma Wernig, and cellist Jay Campbell. Together, these acclaimed chamber musicians promise a memorable afternoon, performing Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s transcription for strings of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. A former BBC New Generation Artist, Lewis has received an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and made her BBC Proms debut in 2023. Last spring she performed with the Oak Trio in Hancock \(subbing for the Brazilian violinist Nathan Amaral, who couldn’t get his visa in time\), and the audience fell in love with her. Wernig, a prizewinning soloist and principal violist of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, is known for her expressive, inventive approach to the viola. Campbell’s playing has been called “electrifying” by The New York Times; he has worked closely with composers including John Zorn and John Luther Adams. “It seems like violinist Geneva Lewis is everywhere: Europe, Ojai, Boston, New York City…,” says Artistic Director Jody Hill Simpson, “and every time I read about her, I pinch myself that she is coming to Hancock too.” This distinctive arrangement of one of Bach’s masterpieces will be performed at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8 in Hancock’s First Congregational Church.
